To Sydney with Love Fund

This is going to look silly to many but it is a hope to me.

I'm just a guy, standing in front of a man, asking him to love him. A simple request but it never came through for the past seven years. My three-year long distance love with an American ended this year. I suggested that I moved to the U.S. twice but he never embraced the idea.

Separation does not help in building relationship. I learned my lesson painfully. A sweet Australian man entered my life recently. With his consent, I will be flying over to Sydney and to be with him for as long as I could.

This is not a holiday -it's about pursuing a chance to be loved or to love. I haven't found a job there yet. I'm sure he would help me in whatever he could but I would like to do my part.

"To Sydney with Love" Fund is an idea to help my transition in Sydney smoother while finding a job. I won't ask your support for nothing. Purchase a Christmas e-card at USD3.

Goodbye, Curious George's Writer - Alan Shalleck

Alan J. Shalleck
November 14, 1929 - February 6, 2006

Justice was served on 19 October, 2007. One of Shalleck's killer, Rex Ditto, 31 has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and robbery with weapon. His accomplice and gay lover, Vincent Puglisi, 56 is scheduled for trial early next year.

Bananation pays tribute to Alan J. Shalleck, co-writer of the cartoon, Curious George, the mischievious monkey who had animated the kids' world since the 1980s. With his success of the televlsion series (about 100 short episodes) on Disney Channel, he and Curious George's creator, Margret Rey, colloborated on a series of book squeals. In Singapore, Curious George was not a known cartoon character in the 1980s.

Born in Westchester County, NY, Shalleck's career in children's entertainment dated back to 1950 when he joined CBS and worked in its mailroom. A drama major from Syracuse University, he rose to become an associate producer for 'Winky Dink and You', a morning kid show which ran from 1953 to 1957. After producing numerous children's films, he formed his company and the rest are history. However, he closed down his New York production company and worked as a children story teller at the Boynton Beach Borders bookstore, Florida in the early 1990s. He formed a new company, Reading By GRAMPS, and appeared publicly at book stores and local events. He also tutored, mentored and conducted workshops on improving reading skills for kids. A man with a goal to excite children in reading, his death is a loss to the future of our kids.

Shalleck, 76 was brutally stabbed 80 times at the abodmen, neck and groin. His body was found under a pile of trash in the front yard of his impeccably landscaped mobile home at Boynton Beach. Neighbors had seen his murderers, Ditto and Vincent visiting, and police claimed that their acquaintance was through a sex club. However, Ditto claimed that Shalleck engaged his carpet cleaning service from a newspaper advertisment. Now, who's telling the truth about how they met?

Ditto's side of his story began like this: His attorny advised him to plead guilty (although he calimed that he didn't do it) and take a life sentence without the chance of parole. He intended to fire his attorney and defend himself but the judge advised against the idea in view of his mental incompetency. Ditto (inset: left) struggled with mental illness since the age of 18. He met Vincent (inset: right) in January; the relationship was short yet dramatic. Vincent initiated the breakup but returned with a pair of sneakers and a watch to win Ditto's heart. Apparently, both items became the evidences that police used against Ditto. He alleged that he was framed because Vincent knew he had a criminal record. Currently locked up in prison, Ditto passed his time studying his case. He sold his lunch to fellow inmate to buy a stamped envelope to mail a letter to the judge requesting for permission to defend himself. Maybe mental experts can save me the time of googling and enlighten me if the ability to think rationally remains in the subconscious mind of the insane?

So far, there isn't any wacko-jacko alike accusation towards Shalleck for his association with children. The divorced man maybe living a secret gay life, but he had brought 50 years of joy to generation and generation of children. I am not sure if our local papers reported this case. If they do and parents learned that shalleck was gay, I hope they would not boycott Curious George at Borders or worst, throw away what titles their kids already have. Like the late writer, the stories are innocent: let our kids continue to be curious with George.

Should Gay Christians turn Straight in the name of God? Wisdom from Queer As Folk

If you are a gay Christian and are unable to reconcile your faith with your sexual orientation, I've got something to share from the long-running series "Queer As Folk".

Ted Schmidt (inset:left) bumped into a man at the pharmacy whom he had casual sex with. That guy bought a HIV related drug. Ted fearing that he might be infected went for a HIV blood test. His best pal, Emment Honeycutt (inset:below) accompanied him and did the blood test too.

Days later, Ted received a call from the hosiptal saying that he was fine. However, Emment received a call to revisit the hospital. Emment was afraid that he might be HIV+. He promised God that if he was fine, he would turn straight. That was a big deal to someone who was the Queen of the gay city. To cut the witty details, Emment turned out to be fine and he fulfilled his promise to God. He joined See The Light, a group of gays and lesbians who envisioned to be straight. Emment was so involved in coming-out-of-the dark (thanks to Gloria Estefan) that he cut himself out from the gay world, including alienating his best friend, Ted. Since Emment would not go to Ted, Ted visited Emment at the group gathering with their mutual friend, Michael. The scene was emotionally charged. Ted tried to salvage the friendship and this is an extract of what he told Emment:

"And I think God appreciates it as much as you do. We want to let you know that we still love you...maybe not as much as Jesus but almost. And that we're going to miss you. Oh, I think God appreciates it even more 'cause he created you in His image. At least that's what I was always taught. And since God is love, and God doesn't make mistakes, then, you must be exactly the way He wants you to be, the way He intended you to be"

How much more do Christians need to know that being gay is not a mistake? The orthodox churches are going to burn me on the stake for tarnishing God's image. My brethen brothers, are going to say that yes, God makes no mistakes but homosexuality is a seed planted by Satan in the human's body.

By its anti-procreation element, the gay world is perceived to be against God's commandment. I dislike reading the Bible like the way theologians do. Faith is not a subject that can be mastered. Since God is wise and we are created in His image, we have all the wisdom within us to understand what He had truly said. Man's words are deceitful (and by the same note, I can be deceiving if you think I am).

Ever tell yourself that God wants us to be happy? We are His Children and He is our Heavenly Father. Living in denial and guilt about who we are neither make us nor God happy. I had tried to become straight in the past. Of course it didn't work. How dare I alter God's creation! My mind is programmed to desire men and so be it. What Ted said was a simple concept to understand. If we think that he is devil-sent, his words are blasphemous; otherwise, heaven must be missing an angel. Don't think too hard. Because when God's tell us something, He makes sure it's simple enough for us to understand. So if we feel that being gay chained us down and demoralised our life, open our hearts and listen carefully - for God is singing to the Gay Nation: "don't worry, be happy."

Is Mocca.com Targeting Gay Consumers in its Latest TV Ad?

The first time I saw this TV commercial (TVC), my jaw dropped. A bodybuilder in his zebra stripes underwear was flaunting his biceps, triceps, pecs... and his armpits too. Thank God that he shaved.

This is the third TVC of Mocca.com, a website for online classifieds and community. It's first two TVCs though suggestive are not repulsive; this one is simply cheap taste. Without doubt, flashing of muscles and bulge on prime time is going to capture a lot of eyeballs. But not every tantalizing endeavor can be an Abercrombie's success. If the TVC's intention is to create an awareness of Mocca among gays by serving us 'beefcake', its marketing department failed terribly. Here are some views posted in the forum of a local gay site:

"How can they think of such a gross act that simply has not much taste?"

Posted by member, C1/1.

"And the worst is the beefcake...its kinda repulsive for me to digest."

Posted by member, Blaze.

"Some of my friends are freaked out by the bodybuilder."

Posted by member, Drenched.

"Quite gross the way he introduced the rooms/kitchen. Pretty awkward for a family commercial like this."

Posted by member, Topaz.

Of course, there are some gays who are blinded by muscles and delight themselves in the TVC. I love bodybuilders but I am a discerning admirer. Most gays have good taste in appreciating creativity. If we want eye candies, we know where to look for them.

My Boss is a Homophobe

The lunch was to celebrate someone's last day with the company and to welcome the new staff. The big bosses were there.

Being a new comer, I tried to break the ice over the table. At one point of my conversation, I professed that I am gay. Some colleagues already knew but not the big bosses. We continued our merry-making, thinking that nobody cared of my sexual orientation. Apparently, one of the bosses did.

She told her Personal Assistant that she almost fell off her seat when I said I had a boyfriend. When I heard that, I was flummoxed because she had gay superior before. I took her words as an indication of suprise. I was, however, not quite right to think in that way. She did not regain her composure the next morning. She was acting like a homophobe. She forced a smile when I grinned at her. Whenever our path met in the office, she gave me that here-comes-that-faggot look. I told a gay friendly colleague over MSN about her homophobia and he replied, "Probably because of her religion?" I shall not stereotype and compartmentalise the various religions and their level of intolerence towards PLU*. But I really do not see what her problem was. Knowing she had worked under a gay boss, she ought to see beyond the fact that some guys prefer dick to pussy. I thought that she being younger compared to the aunties in the office, she would be more receptive to alternative lifestyle. I hope I was just paranoid after what her PA had told me. But If my gaydar could detect the presence of straight men in camouflage, how hard it is to distinguish between a gay friendly and a homophobe?

Singapore has already dropped the American's military "Don't Ask. Don't Tell" policy since 2003 when the government announced that it would hire gay people but we are to declare our sexual orientation in the job application forms. Having worked in the government sector, surely she is aware of such a change. Did she practise double standard that her bosses can be gays but not her subordinates? If she did, I am not suprised but just disappointed. Like some parents, they could accept anyone as gay except their kids. If homosexuality should not be criminalised if it truly was genetic as some doctors had informed our Mentor Minster, Lee Kuan Yew, then homosexuals in the workplace should not be discriminated too.

How many closet gays in their 30s or more tell the truth when asked if they have girlfriends or why they are single? Well, I did and a teacher in a respectable school too. He outed himself on his blog but had to remove it under duress from the ministry (The NewPaper, September 14, 2007). I didn't go around telling people that I am gay; it evolved as part of the conversations. I was not ashamed to talk about my sexuality. On the same note, some people might want to be spared of the details. My big boss obviously preferred the 'Don't Ask. Don't Tell' way - she remarked about my openness to her PA.

She is entitled to her perception. She can pretend that gays do not exist in her world, I cannot pretend to be who I am not and engage in evasive conversations with people. Enough is enough. If they accept me, they will be my friends; if not, they will never be. I just want to be proud of who I am and the 3-year relationship I have. However, the price I would have to paid is to subject myself to public scrutiny like the encaged animals in the zoo. As this is my first encounter with a homophobe (not to mention, my boss), I googled for advices on dealing with homophobic bosses. This is what Monster career advice has to say: accept the situation, change it or leave it.

The first step in confronting anti-gay behavior is to document it. In my own words, I will interpret it as keeping a journal of 'how to nail your homophobic boss?' So when she denies my allegations, I can simply throw her my journal and walk out of her office. But turning back to remind her that it will be pointless to burn my journal because I have photocopied it.

The second step is to find a confidante who knows the boss and company well enough but not necessary gay, and who will support my quest in fighting the anti-gay management. I already have two straight men in my department but I doubt they will risk anything to defend me in the name of justice. It is as good as asking for a show of hands who are gays.

The third step is to know my rights. I had worked in an American firm here that practises equal opportunity employment. I do not think that my Human Resource will tell me enthusiastically that yes, we cherish and protect our gay employees. In Singapore, there aint any rights to talk about. I could, however, make headlines if my situation worsen and I lodge a complaint to the the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC). Hmm... that may turn me into a gay hero of Singapore.

The fourth step is to ask my boss directly, "What's your problem?" or compliment how chic her hair looks. You would have known which option I will pick. If asslicking is my strategy, I would not have placed my career on the butcher table.

For the time being, I doubt I will take any of the above step. Like the conclusion of Monster career advice, I will end my blog with the same:

"Don't compromise yourself. Your work should speak for itself. And if an employer discriminates against you and you don't want to go the route of pressing charges, then leave your job. Life is too short to work for a jerk.”

Why do Men have Nipples?

Why do men have nipples? You may have seen them at the bookstore - I mean, not the nipples, but the New York Times #1 Bestseller by Mark Leyner and Billy Goldberg. It is a question that nobody can answer because male nipples have no real function. Although men can produce milk (lactation), no baby will suck on daddies' nipples. I know it's hard to believe but it's true. Watch this Youtube video of a man squeezing milk from his nipples (Warning: it may spoilt your appetite). Anyway, I'm not going to question why I have nipples; that's for the evolutionary biologists to tell me. But I can explain from a gay fetish point of view.

This morning, I saw them again. Last week, I had a similiar sighting at the same gym - Californa Fitness, Bugis Junction. I was at the bicep curl machine towards my 2nd set of 10 repetitions when a guy sashayed past my view. He was not actually catwalking but I was damn sure that he was flaunting something on his muscular body - his nipple. 200 metres away from him, I could not miss the nipple that passed my eyes. It was huge. From the way he exposed his nipple, I knew he was a tits flasher. He could have easily tucked it under his tanktop but he wouldn't. The strap of his tanktop was hanged skillfully on his cleavage to prevent it from falling so that other men wouldn't miss the magnificent view (inset: left). Very gay and he is definitely one. When I thought that I could get the tit pig out of my head, our path crossed at the dumbbell area. He was doing the bench press and what a chance to show off again. We were at close proximity (and mind you, I was not stalking him). This time, I saw both his huge, brown nipples against the contrast of his fair skin. One of them had a blink - a nipple ring. The difference between this sighting and that of last week was the former was a man in his 50's (but still in great shape), and the latter was a beefcake in his 30's. Both, however, have their big nipples screaming out for attention. To who? The gay men of course.

Gay sex has a myriad of fetishes and nipple play is among them. What both guys did at the gym was probably a way to cruise for like-minded gay men. Otherwise, I really do not see any valid reason to expose their nipples when they are clothed. I have seen buff men wearing tight tanktops but hardly anyone displayed their nipples in such brazen manner. Some may think that I am making a mountain out of a mole hill. Afterall, what's wrong with guys exposing their nipples? Nothing wrong, actually. It was just a culture shock. Nipple pumping is common in the west and enlarged nipples are as ubiquitous as traffic lights. In Singapore, I have never seen men with nipples like those I saw at the gym. They are definitely the work of a pump or snakebites (inset above). Natural nipples can be big but never stretched and pointed.

It's beyond the comprehension of straignt men that gay men are enlarging their tits; to them, women should be the one concerned about their nipples size. It takes a member of the fetish group to understand what make nipples an erogenous zone. Otherwise, what motivate them to flaut their award-winning tits other than the mere reason of soliciting admiration from the tit slaves? In the gay world where size is worshipped, the nipple gods are reincarnation of Narcissus. I wonder if Singaporean women are turned on by huge tits on a muscular chest? I know white women do.

Bearforce 1 - the Bearish Boyband

The BearForce1 (L-R: Robert, Yuri, Peter & Ian)

Forget about Backstreet Boys, Westlife or any smooth pretty boy pop groups. The hairy boys from Holland are here to take the gay world by storm. They call themselves 'Bearforce 1' and it's the world's 1st bear band. To the straight community, bears are the large mammals that we see at the zoo. In the gay communty that speaks a myriad of lingos, bears are mature men with hairy bodies and facial hair.

Coincidentally, I was holidaying with the four bears, Yuri, Robert, Peter and Ian in New York in Summer 2006. We were at the Big Apple at the same season but we did not meet. Perhaps, I met them but they were unknown then. They were strangers to another until their passion for music and performance brought them together. On a nite-out, they met producers, Goldschmidt and Rockfeller and the rest were history.

Bearforce 1 became an overnight sensation with their self-titled single 'Bearforce 1'. A friend forwarded me an email with a Youtube link to their music video and I was so amused. Don't get me wrong. They are certainly not clowns (like some) on Youtube who entertained us with their silly acts; Every bearforce 1 member performed with such fervor that you could tell that they are serious about their music career.

The opening scene of their music video is a teaser: four silhouettes of musclemen emerging from the sea like Daniel Craig did in the movie 'Casino Royale 007'. But as the music kicked in with their husky voice, they were transported from the glittering sea to a studio of disco light. Four muscle...hmm...bears crooned and danced in unification to the catchy chorus 'Bear Force 1' with their signature dance steps - shouting "Bear!" and crossing their wrists. "Force!" and saluting. "One!" and holding up a finger. If you wanna see yourself dancing like Bearforce1, try this game. The 4:19 mins video began and ended with the original 'bearforce 1' anthem but with a medley of the gayest 80's hits in-between. From their tight colorful Polo-Ts to the choreography, the music video has so much vibes that you won't be sick of watching it (especially when they took of their Ts:-)

Are Straight Gay Icons truly Gay-Friendly or not?

M - the most worshipped alphabet in the gay arena. Think M(en). Think M(adonna). If you can't think further, the record companies can think of more - M(arketing) and M(oney).

In the latest issue of Forbes [Celebrity 100], Madonna is ranked No.3 as the world's most powerful celebrity and ranked No. 9 as the highest pay star. Beside grossing 72 million in earning, her 'Confession' Tour last year hit the cash register at 194 million, the most profitable tour for female artiste. Boy George, former Culture Club's androgynous singer lambasted Madonna for making money out of gay people but yet she is a part of Kabbalah, a religious sect which he claimed to be anti-gay. If the fat Karma Chameleon's words were true, will Madonna remain within the top 10 ranking if we take away her large base of gay fans? If the gay market is not lucrative, what made Enrique Iglesias jumped into the bandwagon? (see detail below). Bananation explores the agendas behind gay-friendly celebrities and their music career being a gay icon. On a scale of $ $ $ $ $, Bananation rates the stars' agenda level.

The Modern Queen of Fag Hag - Madonna

In 2003, Madonna kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV Video Music Award and her daughter questioned her if she were gay. In 2006, she declared to chat show host, Michael Parkinson that she is a gay man trapped in a woman's body. Then in her Confessions Tour, she angered the Middle Eastern nation when two topless male dancers, one with a Jewish symbol and another a Muslim symbol painted on their chest kissed each other. Is she all OUT to win the hearts of the gay community? Yes. In fact, she enjoyed being the gay icon so much that she is afraid of losing her laurel.

Before Richard Florida wrote about the pink economy in 2002, Madonna ha already orchestrated her move in the 1980s to become a gay icon. She expressed her grief over the loss of her gay friends to AIDS in her song 'Is This Life'. She then provi
ded solace to the closeted gays in 'Deeper and Deeper', a song about 'coming out'. When she finally 'Vogue' her way on MTV channel, every gay man wants to dance and rap like Madonna. In 2005, she solidified her Queen's status by getting her gay entourage 'Hung Up' on the dancefloor with their confessions.

Her Madollar($) aside, she has a story behind her gay appeal. As a teenager, she was motivated by her gay ballet teacher, Christopher Flynn to pursue a professional dancing career at Manhattan. Christopher was the only one who believed in her talents and beauty. She heed his advice and arrived in Manhattan, living among drag queens and gay rentboys. Many of her inspirations came from gay men. Without them, she could now be your next door middle-age woman, Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone. And do you know that her younger brother, Christopher Ciccone is gay and choreograhed some of her videos and live show? If Fire Island is thinking of a campaign to promote the isle as a gay men weekend escapez, 'La Isla Bonita' will make a memorable jingle.

Princess of Fag Hag - Kylie Minogue

The petite Diva from Melbourne, Australia started her music career as early as Madonna. However, when the Material Girl was already a media sensation all over the world, Kylie is still struggling with her music direction. Although she had a few memorable dance hits between the 1980s and 1990s that struck a cord with the gay community, she remained a relatively unknown in the US. She was only known in her hometown and in Europe.

But in 2001, Cathay Dennis turned Kylie into an international brand with just one song she penned - 'Can't Get You out of My Bed' (oophs, it's out of my Head). The dance hit was the biggest success of her 20-years music career. It topped No.1 on the chart in over 40 countries and skyrocketed her to superstardom. Kylie attracted a sea of gay followings who couldn't get her out of their heads. The hit caused such a trance in gay parties that even the non-English speaking crowd could be heard singing 'na na na...'. To substain the Kylienatic, she overdosed her gay fans with a plethora of skins nudging in slow motion agasint one another by the pool in her music video 'Slow'. She moved on to collaborate with Scissor Sisters for her single ' I Believe in You' to create a synergy between gay artistes and their fans.

The Pop Princess adopts the late Princess Diana's community-walking approach in winning her gay followers. She is active at gay events, venues and she supports AIDS causes. Publicily, she acknowledged that her gay fans are loyal from the beginning. When she made a comback in 2006 after her battle with Breast Cancer in 2005, her gay fans have indeed not forsaken her. Her 'ShowGirl - Homecoming' Tour in Sydney was a triumph.

Gay Curious Pop Maverick - Robbie Williams

Let's assume he is straight for discussion sake. Instead of speaking against his gay rumors, Robbie played hide-and-seek with the media. He admitted to kissing a man but conceded that he was not attracted to men. He claimed that he wouldn't give a toss if people thought he was gay but years later, he sued The People newspaper and the Northern & Shell magazines, Star and Hot Stars, over gay sex allegations. His Barrister, Tom Shields QC told the Court that Robbie is and never has been gay. His media game is lambasted by gay campaigner, Peter Tatchell as an exploitation of the gay market.

When major record companies were condemning illegal music download, Robbie didn't give a damn if people are downloading his music legally or not.
He has bigger problems to deal with than to impress anybody. He rather be a pop maverick than be a boot licker. Blame it on his indulgence in dopes, alcohol, sex and more sex - the cause of his pendulumic mood. He probably thought he was gay at the point when he boasted to the media. In his song, "Old before I Die", he questioned if he were straight or gay. In 'Kids', a duet with Kylie Minogue, he sang "The press be asking if I care for sodomy, I don't know, yeah, probably." His other popular hits like 'Supreme', ' Your Gay Friend' and 'We're the Pet Shop Boys" also suggest that Robbie is not a homophobe but just confused .

Being a gay icon is effortless to Robbie: his personal life is already a good marketing mix. His bad boy image is not created; it evolved. Will his music carrer be destoryed like Jason Donovan after winning the case agasint his gay sex allegation? Time will tell. Until he retreats to his cocoon, he is still Britain's biggest pop star.

Bananation rating:
Gay friendly agenda: fook you.

Rising Fag Stag - Enriques Iglesias

He made headlines in the gay community when he sang 'Hero' to a guy in Club G.A.Y, London. Why the sudden change in marketing direction after 10 years in the music career? Was it part of a publicity stunt for his soon-to-be released album 'Insomniac'?

Whatever his record company may be comtemplating, this young lad started out with a strong backbone. He submitted his demo under an uncommon name, Enrique Martinez instead of mentioning his legendary singer-father, Julio Iglesias. He only used his real name after he secured a recording contract with Mexican label 'Fonovisa'. In 1999, he crossed over from Spain to the US with his debut English self titled album and generated hits after hits. To name a few, 'Bailamos (We Dance), 'Be with You' and an international success 'Hero'. He has achieved gold and platinum status in 32 countries.

With his electrifying good look and a wow performance at London's gay pub, surely his new album will sell a few extra million copies worldwide. How could he possibly have insomnia? May be yes but staying awake to think of the next gay pub to perform at.

Comment
"Im a Christian & my view is that homosexuality, adultery, incest, free love & rape are all regarded as sins (sexual immorality). But, I don't condemn the sinners who need to be counseled & encouraged to repent. However, human beings are not perfect, they will continue to sin even among those who are highly educated & have the intellectual capacity to know, understand & differentaite what is morally right & what is not. The best solution is not to make them feel that they are 'crimnals' but to show them love & understanding to help them stay away from those sins. Alternatively, 'secular' rules or laws can be enacted to contain the 'activites' to within certain acceptable legal boundary. the Bible says everyone on eartn is born sinful except Jesus Christ who was God-incarnate."

His survey results:

Are you a heterosexual male or female?
Married male with kids

Do you know any homosexuals on a personal level?
No

Please choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
Decriminalization of section s377A will have harmful social consequences: Neutral
Homosexuals carry higher risk of STD and AIDS virus transmission: Netural
Homosexuals lead promiscuous and hedonistic lifestyle:Disagree
Safe sex education will be more effective if we stop victimising homosexuals: Disagree

Do you have a religion?
Yes

Is homosexuality offensive to you?
No

Conclusion

The size of the survey may be small but it still provides Bananation with a view that most people do not find homosexuality offensive.

This group is made up of single heterosexual men and women who have gay friends. They strongly disagree that gay men are promiscuous and that we carry a higher risk of STD/HIV virus transmission. They do not see how legalising gay sex will harm the society and strongly agree that safe sex education will be more effective if homosexuals are not victimised.

Bearing in mind that this group has a religion, Bananation believes that the strong voices against homosexuals and their legal status come from staunch religious individual or groups. They are unlikely to form friendship with gays and thus lack a true understanding of gays.

Mel White in Singapore

"God might be bored after creating straight peoples that he created queers"
Rev. Dr. Mel White @ Free Community Church talk
[Thank God I am Queer - a Gay Christian's Journey]

May 24,2007, Thursday

7.08pm - I am waiting by the elevator of Yangtze Building at Outram Road near Chinatown. A man stands at an arm length from me and a woman stands adjacent to me. Both look in their 40s. The man is staring blankly into space while the woman is ogling at the sleazy poster of R(A) movies displayed on the wall. Shortly, the elevator descends to the ground floor. As it doors open, I enter and press the 4th floor button. Neither the man nor the woman select a floor.

When the door opens at 4th floor, we are greeted by a row of shops. This is my first visit to the premise to attend a talk by Rev. Dr. Mel White (inset left) on Christians and homosexuality. I have no idea where Free Community Church (FCC) is. The woman enters a beauty parlor and the man walks the other way. Should I follow him? My instinct tells me 'no'. I turn into a corner and pass by a row of sleazy massage salons. I am verbally harassed by a few female masseurs standing outside their shops (White uses the euphemism "a church near a brothel" to speak of FCC's strategic location.) I walk further up and an entrance welcomes me to another world - the Yangtze Cinema, a haven for lecherous old men into softcore movies. On my right, a sign reads 'Free Community Church'. Phew!

7.16pm - FCC has a very humble entrance. At the reception, I take a phamplet on the church and two booklets titled [My Journey toward Affirming the Gay Community- by Rev Dr Yap Kim Hao] and [The Bible & Homosexuality - by Rev Mona West] - both printed by Safehaven, a ministry of FCC, and make my way down to the 2nd row of chairs. From my back, I hear White introducing himself to two women. I turn around to meet this respected, 67-years old gay rights activist. The lanky, bespectacled man wears a beige, short sleeve shirt and a long white pant. Shortly, he walks to my seat. I stand up to greet him. We chat a little before he moves gracefully to welcome the oncoming people. A few fashionably dressed executives and musclebound men sashay across my eyes - a rare sight in churches.

7.28pm - a Hugo-Boss model lookalike host announces that the talk will begin at 7.45pm to accomodate the late comers. (I am told later that he was expelled from a reputable Singapore church because of his sexual orientation.)

7.45pm - The hall is seated with more than 60 men and women in their early 20s to 50s who are eager to listen to White's gay journey. The host introduces him officially to the audience and leaves the stage after an exchange of hug.

"It's good to be introduced because you get a hug".

White's opening line carries a homosexual innuendo but makes everyone laughs. Tonight is an evangelism not for the conservatives and the fundamentalists, but for gay Christians who are torn between the Bible and homosexuality. White shares true stories of young, gay American Christians who committed suicides under the torment of sexuality. To all gay Christians, he says: "homosexuality is a gift from God".

Doctrinated by conservative Christian teachings in his younger days, White believed that a Demon inside him made him gay. He embarked on a electroconvulsive therapy and exorcism to treat his 'disease'. He recalls that he was shown photographs of men and women and each time he saw a man, he had to shock himself. The treatment didn't work because he developed a crush on his therapist. Devastated that his homosexuality was incurable, he cut his wrist. His attempted suicide effected an amicable divorce with his wife. Today, he is in a 23-years relationship with his partner, Gary Nixon, of whom he co-founded the gay rights organization - soulforce. White's friend - a lecturer at a local instituition also shares his coming out story. His Laos boyfriend of 3-years is beside him as he speaks.

8.45pm - the finale is a Question & Answer session. Several questions on gay promiscuity, masturbation, monogamous vs open relationship are raised. White discusses them with personal examples. I am against stereotyping of gay men being promiscuous and this is a chance to be heard. I raise my hand. When White sees me, he says "oh cute". I hear laughters from every corner. Two guys who sit in front of me turn around to look. I blush. White invites me to stand and speak. I don't like being watch from my back and so I walk up to the front to deliver my views. I am happy to win several approving nods from the audience.

9.05pm - The talk ends with a prayer by White.
''Thank God I am queer".

My notes:

Scientifically, homosexuality is no longer a mental disorder and hence requires no cure. The American Psychiatric Association removed it from its list of personality disorders in 1973. Religiously and socially, homosexuality remains an unspeakable sin and an immorality. Regardless if the Bible's views on homosexuality have been misinterpreted or indeed God created queers, pretending to be who we are not and fighting against who we really are, is a self-destructive effort. Is Ted Haggard really straight now after 3 intensive week of counselling? I doubt so.

Janice Dickinson's Pink Venture

I like this bitch. This is the only time I call someone a bitch but yet adore her. Janice Dickinson, the 70's Supermodel is the latest reality TV star on the "JD Modelling Agency" show. I have watched the show since its debut, from how single-handedly she started her own modelling agency with no model to a handful of eye candies. Her business direction was towards the cilenteles of Vogue, GQ alike but not Maxim. Baring of boobs is not her taste, but baring of pecs and abs seems to be her liking. Naturally. In fact, the show has sublimely become a pink venture just like her signature pinkish brand 'JD'.

Last night show on the 2(x)ist men underwears was an avalanche of adrenalin. If the show was extended beyond its 1/2 hr to 1 hr, many gay men would have died of cardio arrest. Don't believe? See the reaction of these two guys who were at the showcase in New York.

This TV-show is the gayiest that was ever telecast in Singapore. You can catch last night show and more skin flicks from JDMA below:

Homozila.
Do Homosexuals Destroy Cities?

On the issue of homosexuality in Singapore, many have aired their views. Differences are expected because we live in a socially diversified ecosystem. Differences are also to be respected, albeit with arguments. Be assertive but not aggressive.

Last week, 2 persons wrote to The Straits Times against the decriminalization of gay sex law, Section 377A - Johanthan Cheng Hern Sinn's letter, "MM's comments have me and family worried." on May 1 and Yvonne C.L Lee's article, "Decriminalising homosexual acts would be an error." on May 4. I am upset over the former but am very concern about the latter. Yvonne is an Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore. With all the hullabaloos against decriminalising s377A, I wonder how much the pro-s377A community knows about homosexuals who live among them. Hopefully, not from hearsay.

To understand us, first let me define [homophobia]. I pick the key words that explain the term across 4 online dictionaries and string them to form a concise definition:

An irrational fear of, aversion to, prejudice or
discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals.

Any form of phobia has a specific object or situation which causes the fear. So excuse us. What makes homosexuals or homosexuality so scary from heterosexuals or heterosexuality? Friends and colleagues enjoy my company; family and relatives call me a responisble son. Some pro-s377A may argue that for Pete's sake, these people are nice to me because they didn't know I am gay. They could be right but I can attest for everyone who knows me that they will never forsake me in the name of homophobia. That is, however, not the point that I am making. In the same context that leopards never change their spots, I am still the Mr Nice regardless of my sexual orientation and so do other gay men. Sadly, the cold fact remains that our positive sides are overshadowed once the pro-s377A know we are homosexuals. We are judged by what they didn't see.

I can understand the concern of the pro-s377A community on the extension of homosexual rights to other aspects of our lifestyle should gay sex be legalised. However, I strongly disagree that it will pose a threat to our society morals and public health. To those who see homosexuals as thorns in the flesh, let us know what are your problems with us and we will see if we agree with you.

The recent media frenzy has defocused the pro-s377A, homosexuals and gay-friendly citizen from the essence of s377A. Le'ts recap the stand of the Law Society of Singapore on this issue:

"The majority of the Council considered that the retention of s.377A in its present form cannot be justified. This does not entail any view that homosexuality is morally acceptable, but follows instead from the separation of law and morals and the philosophy that the criminal law’s proper function is to protect others from harm by punishing harmful conduct. Private consensual homosexual conduct between adults does not cause harm recogniseable by the criminal law. Thus, regardless of one’s personal view of the morality or otherwise of such conduct, it should not be made a criminal offence."

Reinforcing on the Council's assertion that criminal laws protect others from harm by punishing harmful conduct, who are we protecting consensual homosexual sex from? Our sons, brothers, boyfriends, fiances, husbands, fathers or grandfathers?

Whether gay gene exists or not, people do not become homosexuals overnight. As we all know, the development of homosexual inclination is the by-product of several complicated factors over a period of time. Homosexuals are already homosexuals. This may sound duh to you but it is the bigger picture that the pro-s377A miss. With or without s377A, homosexuals will continue to have sex with one another in their rooms. Liberalising gay sex will never infect the heterosexual heartland: we have no interest in breaking up families or brainwash straight people to be gay. If there is already a homosexual(s) living in your family, we can't infect them further. Even when gay sex is legalised, it does not mean rice bowls will be broken. Homosexuals are already working in many private and civil servcies, and the straight workers still have their jobs. To say that alternative media and entertainment will be mainstreamed into the society after decriminalisation of s377A is akin to living in a stone age. If homosexuals in Singapore have to look up to MDA on approving what are approriate for our consumption, we would already be the frogs in the well and manipulated by the conservatives and fundamentalists. To complicate the issue, the pro-s377A still think that they are justified in claiming sex between men carries a higher risk of HIV infection than sex between men and women in Singapore. Tell me that I misinterpreted these data from the Ministry of Health from 1985 to 2006. If MSM (men who have sex with men) are percieved to be lethal carriers of HIV virus, victimising homosexuals under s377A creates a bottleneck in the combat against AIDS and other sexual transmitted diseases. When homosexuals stay in the dark, safe sex education will only see a shimmer at the end of its tunnel.

When we preach that Singapore is a multiracial, multicultural and multireligious society, we must also advocate harmony among the various diversified communities in our country. All the crossfire in the debate over social consequences of decentralising gay sex will only turn the deaf ears of the pro-377A to our outcrys - homosexuals are not godzillas that destory cities.

Letters to Forum Editor: Issue of Homosexuality

I am upset over forum contributor, Mr Jonathan Cheng Hern Sinn's letter "MM's comments have me and family worried." (ST, May 1).

I shall not deliver a harangue to dispel Mr Cheng's homophobia. That will only invite lampoons from the like-minded community. Instead, allow me to share my story.

I had dated girls in the past; today, I am a homosexual man in a long distance relationship with an American. If we generalise that "homosexuals lead a promiscuous and hedonistic lifestyle", I must be an outcast in my community. You won't find me at gay pubs, saunas and chatrooms; surfing pornography is the only activity that makes me bohemian. You can interview my close friends (straight and gay), and they will tell you how much I live like you and me. I do not cruise for sex. I go to the gym or catch up with friends after work. I stay at home most weekends to read books, watch DVDs or play the piano. I do have my indulgence in shopping - not on fashion but on books and music. When time and finances allow, I travel to meet my boyfriend, overseas friends, or on my own. I take care of my aged parents well and pay my bills on time. Bearing in my mind that I am a homosexual, do any of these activities appear immoral to you? Anyone can be promiscuous and hedonistic - male, female, gay or straight. Let be broad-minded and not hurt anyone by our own views. I am not the only homosexual who leads a responsible and healthy lifesytle. We can't see air but it exists.

Next, I would like to share my view on the decriminalization of Section 377A. Unavoidably, I have to cite Mr Cheng's again. He said in his letter:

"Singapore today faces the challenge of a declining birth rate and families are breaking down at the same time. To legalise homosexuality will compound these problems, given that homosexual couples do not reproduce."

His statement raises my eyebrows. Everyone knows that homosexuals are unable to make babies between them. More of us means lesser of the heterosexuals, which may contribute to lesser babies. We can't help it. If the doctors that Mentor Minister, Lee Kuan Yew consulted have advised that homosexuals are genetically born, medical professionals would agree that it is wiser to focus on heterosexual couples to increase birth rate. I do agree that liberalising gay sex law may throw in new problems to the society. However, for Mr Cheng to remark that "we do not make it easier to be a homosexual by legalising their activities", he has detracted from the sincerity of his concern for the issue. What will Singapore - our home, our country, benefit by making the life of homosexual citizens difficult? Even if Section 377A is successfully repealed, being a homosexual is still not easy for many. Our challenges are more than the ordinary can embrace.

Singapore is a wholesome country. Let's not forget that we homosexuals help in building it too.
